Disclaimer: I got this game for free, but I wasn’t asked for any favours or be extra nice.
This game was made for me, not literally, but it just has everything I love: history, middle ages, medieval art, old books, illuminations and weirdness galore.
In ‘Scriptorium: Master of Manuscripts‘ you’re a medieval artist, an illuminator, with other words you illustrate books, what a glorious job you have!

The game is gorgeous, every screen you see was made with love and makes your eyes happy.
I mean just look at the starting screen alone:

Before we start you get to pick your character, here’s me:

And here’s my workshop, looks a bit empty and boring doesn’t it?

But of course, as you progress in the game you get to redecorate, look what I managed to turn it into:

You get all sorts of orders, some very weird, some very fun, some very both.

The more orders you accomplish, the more tools, gadgets and workshop stuff you get.
Hang on, this patron that has a commission for me looks rather familiar, oh its one of my friend’s Ironlily‘s soldiers!

She makes medieval themed art, I know her from social media, she made this drawing I’ve shared quite a few times, can’t resist sharing anything that helps debunk myths about the middle ages!

Anyway, here’s what I made for her:

There’s only one thing more fun and exciting than seeing a pal in a game and that is… BEING IN A GAME YOURSELF!!!
Yes, yours truly is in this game!
Such a superb bucket list achievement 🙂
Look, there I am, with my cat Moortje and dog Beike!
And I’ve got a commission for me, I mean you, I mean the player!

My commission is, of course, about medieval hygiene.
Some daft queen is banning bathing and now I’m worried the people of the future are going to think all medieval people were dirty weirdos who never bathed!

To make me happy you have to illuminate two pages I wrote about medieval hygiene, yes I wrote that text!
The next screenshot gives you a good idea of the tools you have access to and how the game works.
You have all sorts of hand drawn (no AI!) art, based on genuine medieval art that you can easily drag and drop, rotate, change, etc. till you get what you want, or better said, what your patron wants:

Here’s what I made:

Have you played this mission?
I would love to see what you made!
Share it on social media and tag me 🙂
The in-game mad animals were very excited about what I made though:

So the game has lots of fun commissions that will challenge you and keep you busy for a very long time.
But what’s also really excellent is that the game has a sandbox where you get to create whatever you want.
Some of the work I’ve seen being shared online is insanely good, it put my work to shame!
Look, I made a business card:

Here’s a subtle illustration I made showing the difference between how the middle ages are usually depicted and one that fits better what most historians these days think, although perhaps a little exaggerated 😉

And, as they kids would say; the Meme Potential is humongous!
I’m sure you can make something much more fun than this, but I still can’t wait to share this when I’m dealing with yet another AI internet polluter:

And when I feel like trolling people who are trying to argue:

Anyway, I am sure you can create something much better and interesting, the internet is already filling up with the most amazing art people have made with this cool game.
If you’ve made a medieval myth debunking piece, let me know!
I want to see it!
Finally, I was so happy with the portrait the lovely developers made of me that I asked them if I could use it as my social media profile and they said yes.
So that’s why I changed it after many years and from now on you’ll see me use it everywhere 🙂
