Film review: ‘The King’ (2019)

Film review!
I’ve watched ‘The King’ (2019).
Here are my comments as I watched it. Yes I will ruin this for you by getting annoyed by details, yes you’ll understand why I’m not allowed to talk while watching stuff with friends & family.

This room just looks wrong, as if decorated with a modern mind. It feels later, not early 15th century. Also nice to see they lit candles on a wall but not above the table where people are working:

Has someone set a fire on the actual mantle in stead of in the fireplace or do we have a set-designer who has never used a fireplace properly?

This actually makes a bit of sense, people knew that wine had antiseptic qualities;

What on earth is he wearing? Is that 100% made of patches?

Lovely zjooooinnkkk sound when swords are drawn… which they generally wouldn’t make…

Are those rubber textured soles?

I like this actor (Sean Harris) and his raspy mumbling voice;

Again a setup that just feels later than the era the story is set in;

For no real reason this plant on a table really annoys me. The chair also looks a lot later than 1400s and what is that in the background?
Makes me think of a modern tiled bathroom…

These are the king and princess of England, what happened to their clothes? Medieval people loved colours, even more so than the Technicolour fifties and those icky 1970s hippies.
And these clothes are baggy, shapeless, his jacket also looks off, everything about this is awful;

Those houses look not quite right, big open gutter in the middle of the street, drab colours, lots of browns, it feels dirty.
Again this feels much more late medieval or early modern era than 1400s:

What on earth is this common innkeeper wearing?
A tapestry, your nan’s 1970s curtains or a heavily hand embroidered or woven priceless dress….

TORCHES. Torches everywhere…

This is the king’s bedchamber. It is very dull and dark even with big windows and a candle.
Where are the wonderful bright tapestries, why are the walls white and not painted in garish colours?

This was an impressive scene;

The colours of these men’s clothes are about as exciting as the drama in this show.

I may be wrong but that is a lot of effort for some chickens. Just tie them by the legs or put them in a woven willow basket.
I find it difficult to imagine someone going through the effort or expenses of having a wooden cage with metal bars made for some chickens;

Trousers in stead of hose?

That’s some accent…. while they of course both could also just converse in French…

That chair, those tables, that armour…. what on earth were they thinking?
Did they get a good deal at the local medieval themed restaurant for props?

The speech got to me though, then again I’m a sucker for pre-battle speeches. But I’ve seen better.

Those rubber suits of armour look dodgy;

The order is “loose” not “fire”, excellent.
I bet some re-enactor on location told them that at the last minute;

Nice such a muddy battle where everyone wears a suit of armour…. kind of makes you wonder why nobody, including important knights, is wearing any kind of identifying colours…
I’ve killed 12!
Frenchies?
No idea.

I always think about what a glorious day it must have been for the first locals to arrive at such a battlefield.
The value of what would have been left behind could change their lives for ever.
If of course the armies had not pillaged and burned your village;

The furniture somehow all looks out of place.
Anyway, that’s about it.

Of course the whole story is full of errors as well, but it’s based on a Shakespeare play so I’ll let that slip.

Conclusion; meh, bland, no passion, drab, historically not very impressive. 4/10.

  1. This movie had the option of getting history right or Shakespeare right, and it failed at both.

    At least Kenneth Branagh’s Henry V managed to split the baby, doing justice to Shakespeare while giving a few nods to historical realism.
