Art review: ‘Winter Landscape with Ice Skaters’ by Hendrick Avercamp (c. 1608)

This article was originally a thread on social media, which is why it is formatted with lots of images and short responses.
The text is about the image below that paragraph.

Another art review, let’s check out some old art together and see what we can find out about it.
This time a wonderful winter themed painting showing us a kind of winter that these days is sadly very rare here in the Netherlands.

‘Winter Landscape with Ice Skaters’ by Hendrick Avercamp (c. 1608):

Isn’t it glorious?
If you want to study a large resolution version you can do that here on the website of the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam.

17th century graffiti!

Yes, those are people doing some pooping. Ew.
The one in the back is hiding behind some trees, the one in the front is using an old boat thats been converted into an outhouse.
Normally the waste would fall in the river and be carried away, no such luck now everything is frozen:

Oi oi! What are you two doing there in the hay?!
The jugs on the building are meant for birds to make nests in… so that people can eat the egg and/or birds;

Doggie! And… oh wait… ew;

Daddy is home!
I love this little scene, so familiar, it brings the past closer, that little family reminds us of us, familiar scenes from our own modern lives;

Ice hockey!
Or Kolven as they called it back then;

More graffiti!
Henricus Av… who could it be?

In these type of paintings someone always goes through the ice;

This looks like so much fun, the ice must be very strong with that many people and even horses on it;

Of course, there’s always someone flat on their face;

You dirty monkey!

Is she laughing at something naughty he said?
He does have a cheeky grin! But look at mr flashy behind them, the trousers, the hat, the gold on his jacket!
What a dreamboat! And he knows it;

But for some in the crowd it’s just another working day.

The end.
