Just finished watching ‘Nosferatu’ and rather liked it. It’s an homage to the 1922 masterpiece of course but also a homage to good old fashioned film making, the gothic darkness, and in some places purely just spoiling the eyes.

The trailer:
I knew I was going to like the film when even the first seconds were a nudge to the 1920s film experience.

And this just makes me happy, such a delicious font;

The vision of 19th century Germany delighted me, sure, could have done with a bit more colour and less blue filter, but with a gothic horror story you don’t really mind, it’s allowed to be bleak:

The costume/hair department also dared to get close to authenticity even when these styles may be a bit alienating to the modern viewer, something film makers are sometimes afraid of. They could have pushed it a bit further if you ask me:

Another brave thing: darkness. 19th century gas lights give us plenty of dark corners and not much detail for us to look at. Filmmakers often fear this and want to make sure everything is lit perfectly:

Visuals like this can be injected straight into my veins:

I love it when you can randomly pause a film and realise that you’d put that scene in a frame on your wall, just gorgeous:

I like that the count has a chest that might be as old as he is. It belongs in a museum:

Dafoe doing the Dafoe thing:

The shadow reaches over the city, straight from the 1922 film, love it:

A scene that could be a painting:

There were several moments where the film was actually uncomfortable, difficult & scary to watch. Which I of course loved. This was one of those scenes:

Actually terrifying:

Another great shot. My eyes enjoyed this film even more than my brain did. I can’t say much about historical accuracy as I’m not specialised in this era, but it all looked and felt good and convincing:

All in all, quite a masterfully made film, glad to see an actually scary vampire again in stead of the seductive pretty boys of late. Also I am not a vampire, honest. Is that the time? I better go to bed.
