Remember ‘The First Great Train Robbery’?
Oh boy… It’s an 1978 film set in Victorian times with Sean Connery & Donald Sutherland:

I’ve watched it before because it’s where this famous photo came from that some people thought was really Victorian…

Although I debunked that photo years ago, my old pal @volksvlijt asked me if I had spotted something else interesting in that film… and I couldn’t believe my eyes when I had a look…
Check out this crowd scene, notice anything unusual?

Oh my god… HIPPIES!!!

Okay, yes, I know, not hippies per say, I’m just getting flashbacks to my childhood, to me everyone was a hippie in the 1970s.
Look at those clothes:

They’re everywhere!

Clearly they brought in a bunch of random people off the street to fill up the scene in the background and either didn’t think they’d be visible or that they’d look fine as long as they didn’t wear a Rolling Stones T-shirt or something:

If it was just one shot you could also assume that perhaps the camera was moved at the last moment and the person responsible didn’t think the crowd would be filmed from this angle, but no, there’s another scene, a dramatic one… and there they are again!

Far out & groovy.
Yes on the right we see a woman in jeans and two men with denim jackets.

The one with the dark jacket looks like my dad 😉

The longer you look the more you see.
This is not a scene that flashes by and these are not just a few extras in the background, you can’t miss them!
Oh dear, I think they heard us;

What were they thinking?
Cameraman should have noticed them, director should have checked with the cameraman, etc.
Send the hippies away, better a smaller crowd than a bad crowd.
But then I noticed the background…

This is a matte painting, this involved they cover something in a film that the director doesn’t want there to be with an actual painting on glass that covers a non fitting background.
So these houses cover up modern housing that’s there in the real world. But who painted this!??

I mean, what?
This is a big budget film you know, they have real Victorian trains, massive sets, expensive actors, action, explosions!
$6,000,000 budget!!
But this is the best matte artist they could afford?

t almost didn’t make me notice the hippies;

Anyway, I’m sorry.
This isn’t really a review, it’s just a very childish pointing and laughing at a few very silly bits I noticed.
Which isn’t really fair because it’s actually quite a fun film, one of those good old fashioned adventure stories.
I mean just look at this awesome trailer;
I just couldn’t resist sharing the wacky stuff I spotted.
And now you’ll never be able to watch it without spotting the hippies.
May the gods forgive me.
